Das Zitieren von Forschungsdaten sollte so selbstverständlich sein, wie das Zitieren von Publikationen, also den Forschungsergebnissen (wie z.B. Monographien oder Zeitschriftenaufsätzen), und zur guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis gehören. Werden Forschungsdaten zitiert und sind so auffindbar, hilft das nicht nur die Reproduktion, Verifzierung und Überprüfbarkeit der Forschungsergebnisse zu gewährleisten, es ist außerdem ein Nachweis der Forschung selbst und unterstützt deren Verbreitung, indem es die Kommunikation über diese erleichtert. Ferner kann der Wissenschaftler durch diese Kommunikation Reputation in seinem Fachgebiet und darüber hinaus erlangen. Wenn publizierte Forschungsdaten über Persistent Identifier außerdem leicht auffindbar sind, indem bspw. eine URN in der Publikation auf die Forschungsdaten verweist, kann dies auch die Nachnutzung dieser vereinfachen und ermöglichen.
