On October 5, 2023, the DFG-funded research project Patents4Science hosted the workshop "Linked Open and FAIR Data Challenges for Exploiting Patent Knowledge in Science". The workshop took place at the head quarter of the Leibniz Association in Berlin.

In the context of the workshop, on the one hand, current developments and technologies in the areas of knowledge modeling, linked data and text analysis for the extraction, enrichment and linking of patent information with scientific literature and other (domain-specific) information sources was presented and, on the other hand, the current status and the needs of scientists in using with patent information in application-oriented research (e.g. plasma technology, additive manufacturing) was discussed.

Main topics included the use Linked Open Data and domain-specific ontologies for establishing semantic access to patent data, AI methods for patent retrieval and analysis, and knowledge graphs for modeling and accessing patent and scientific information.

Project Patents4Science

In Patents4Science, a new and innovative information infrastructure (P4SI) for the use of patent knowledge in science and research is being developed.  The P4SI is intended to enable simple, efficient and sustainable access to patents and the knowledge they contain based on Linked Open and FAIR data principles. For this purpose, the contents of patents will be semantically indexed and interoperably linked with scientific literature and other domain-specific knowledge sources in a patent-centric knowledge graph (Patent Knowledge Graph).
